Weight loss improves joint pain

Recent research has found that people suffering from joint pains and inflammation of the joint, can have the pain reduced by weight loss and exercise. The research used patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee.

An 18 month diet plan was given to those who are overweight or obese and suffer from joint disorder; they lost around 10% of their body weight and witnessed less frequent joint pain. The weight loss participants were split into three groups; there were those who stuck to just the diet plan; only exercise; and a combination of the both. Here are the results:

  • Diet plan only: participants lost 89kg, which totals up to 9.5% body fat
  • Exercise only: participants lost 1.8kg, a total of 2% body fat
  • Combination of the both: participants lost 10.6kg and 4% body fat
